This Momentary Marriage

Jimmy and I have been reading through John Piper's book This Momentary Marriage. Although I have trouble following along with Piper at times, this book has been a great challenge to our marriage. This Momentary Marriage is not one of those sappy "quick fix" marriage books that give you 6 steps to a happy marriage. Piper challenges the heart of marriage, the serious calling we have as married couples to uphold the representation of Christ and the church. It's not all about us and our love for each other. It's about Christ!

"Marriage is more than your love for each other...In your love you see only the heaven of your own happiness, but in marriage you are placed at a post of responsibility towards the world and mankind. Your love is your own private possession, but marriage is more than something personal-it is a status, and office. Just as it is the crown, and not merely the will to rule, that makes the king, so it is marriage, and not merely your love for each other, that joins you together in the sight of God and man."
                                                      -Dietrich Bonhoeffer

I will admit, I still struggle with this a little. I would like to believe that I will be this happy in love for the rest of my life. However, in an imperfect world, there is the reality of sin. That is why my perspective of this is so important. Going into my marriage, I think my focus was directed in the wrong place. My goal was to be the perfect wife, and make sure that we always stayed in love. This may be my plan, but God's plan is so much bigger!

Marriage is not only God's creation, but it is for His glory! Marriage is intended by God to be an earthly display of the covenant relationship of Christ and his church. (Mathew 9:15; 25, John 3:29) It is so much greater than my happiness! What a high calling to be chosen as a representation of Christ and the church. I  pray that when others look at our marriage they don't just see happiness, but that they see Christ.

"It is not your love that sustains the marriage,
but from now on, the marriage that sustains your love"
