Parenting from Proverbs 1

I realize I have had 9 months to get used to the idea of being a mother.
Still, it sometimes hits me all at once:
The responsibility
The potential
The seriousness
The joy
The privilege
of being a mother.

More than anything, the responsibility of being a mom scares me! It's not something I take flippantly or with a "it will all work out" attitude. I realize that I will be responsible not just for the physical health of my sweet baby girl, but I am also responsible for her emotional and spiritual health!
The kind of woman she grows up to be has a lot to do with the kind of mother I am.
That's a huge responsibility!
I want to be intentional about being patient, loving, firm, selfless, encouraging, inspiring, and challenging to my daughter.

I have been studying the topic of parenting in Proverbs. What better place to find inspiration for parenting than from God's word right?

I hope to periodically share with you some of the verses I have found. Here is what I got from chapter one. It's amazing how much God has to say about raising children!

Teach your children to stand strong in the midst of temptation:
Proverbs 1: 10
"My son, if sinners entice you, do not give in to them."

Show them the potential destructiveness of their sin.
Proverbs 1:31-32
"They will eat the fruit of their ways and be filled with the fruit of their schemes. For the waywardness of the simple will kill them, and the complacency of fools will destroy them.

Teach them wisdom.
Proverbs 1:33
"But whoever listens to wisdom will live in safety and be at ease, without fear of harm.

So much of our culture today teaches that we need to let our kids figure things out for themselves, that it's not necessary to teach them to stand up for what's right, show them the consequences of sin, or teach them to be wise. God's word teaches us the opposite. We need to be intentional about directing our children in the right path! They need guidance...and they are either going to get it from their parents...or from somewhere else.
I am very thankful for the Lord, His word and the wisdom that it has to offer even when it comes to being a parent!

36 weeks

36 weeks. Can you believe there's only one month left? It's a little bittersweet. I'm going to miss all the little kicks, punches and hiccups...but then the rib jabs and bladder bounces...not so much:)
Most of all, I can't wait to meet her and see what she looks like and just get to know her! It's going to be great!
Yesterday I wrote a post on Bible verses I plan to have with my during labor and delivery. You can check that out here!
I have already thrown a few things together to have with us at the hospital but I'm always looking for suggestions on what to bring...

What items do you recommend packing for the hospital?
And here I am at 36 weeks and 3 days!
How Far Along? 36 weeks-I feel like my belly can't get any bigger!

Movement? Still plenty of movement! She gets the hiccups a lot which is fun. She has also been jabbing her little feet and arms out pretty hard. I love poking at them and her responding back with another little jab. I'm not sure if she likes it, or if she's irritated at me!

Weight Gain: Well the holiday weekend did the trick and I have now gained 20 pounds! There's just so much candy everywhere...this is going to be hard!

Maternity Clothes: I did get a free maternity sweater from Pink Blush Maternity that I will be doing a review on and a $25 giveaway on later this week, so stay tuned!

Best Moment of my week: Black Friday Shopping! Woohoo I got all of my Christmas shopping and made some AWESOME deals. It was probably one of the best years...but I think I say that every year haha. This year, I went with my sister-in-law Elisabeth. We had a great time!

Worst moment of my week: Sciatic nerve pain. It's the worst. I also have had a cold the past couple of days which is no fun:(

Sleep: This cold has been keeping me up at night because I can't breathe! Other than that and the 4 nightly trips to the bathroom, I'm sleeping pretty good!

Miss Anything: I miss being useful! We went out to help some of our friends get their new house ready to move in. There was like nothing I could help with because I'm pregnant!

Cravings: Chocolate...

Aversions: eggs, peppers and onions...even writing it makes me sick!

Gender: Still a girl! I have the doctor check every time to make sure lol. You can read about her gender reveal party here!

Belly Button: It's an outie

Labor Signs: Braxton Hicks. And now I have random pains in my pelvis too which I guess means I'm getting closer to labor!

Other Symptoms: Sciatic nerve pain and just this week my ankles started to swell pretty bad...or should I say cankles?

Mood: Tired and anxious to have the nursery ready!

Looking Forward: Getting nursery projects done. Here's the latest project painting wooden letters of sweet pea's name to match the curtains and pillows in her room! It's all coming together:)

I've got so many other fun projects I need to keep working on too!
Thanks for following along with my pregnancy updates and for your sweet comments! I love reading each and every one of them!

Bible verses for labor and delivery

I decided it was about time that I put together a collection of Bible verse to have with me when I'm at the hospital in labor. Even our birthing instructor said it was a good idea to have something like that on hand for encouragement.

These verses encouraged me even as I looked them up and gave me so much more confidence in preparing for labor and delivery! I hope they encourage you in the same way. God's word is so powerful, especially in those hard moments of life.

Isaiah 46:3-4
Listen to me...you whom I have upheld since you were conceived and have carried since your birth. Even to your old age and gray hair, I am He who will sustain you! I have made you and I will carry you; I will sustain you and I will rescue you.

Jeremiah 1:5, 8
Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you. Before you were born I set you apart.
Do not be afraid...for I am with you...declares the Lord!

Isaiah 41:10
So do NOT fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

Colossians 1:11
Being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, and joyfully giving thanks to the father.

Isaiah 40:29-31
He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow weary and tired, and young men stumble and fall. But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like Eagles; they will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not be faint.

Philippians 4:13
I can do EVERYTHING through Him who gives me strength.

I know there are so many more verses that would be applicable. If you have one I didn't list, I would love for you to comment so I can add it to my note cards!

35 Weeks Pregnant!

35 weeks. Apparently I am now in the home stretch baby!
And seriously, my belly in proportion to the rest of my body must be causing other people pain because this past week, these are the comments I heard more than anything:

"Any day now?"
"Girl you look like you're about to pop!"
"Wow, I don't think you're going to make it to your due date!"
"Look at your belly!"

Yup, I can see my belly...AND I can feel it! It adds some extra weight believe it or not! I really don't mind the comments, and in spite of my increasing humongousness, I love carrying my sweet baby knowing that with every day, I'm a day closer to meeting her! Ahhh I can't wait!!

That brings me to my question of the day:

What was/is your favorite thing that people told you while you were pregnant, and what did you hate to hear?

How Far Along? 35 weeks-yes, I know my belly grew A LOT this week!

Movement? She doesn't kick me as hard anymore...probably because she is running out of room. I still feel her move, hiccup, stretch, and I can even feel her little practice breaths which make me super happy!

Weight Gain: Stayed the same this week at 17 pounds (which is confusing because my belly definitely GREW!)

Maternity Clothes: Ugh, clothes don't really feel good anymore haha! Up until this point, most of my pre-pregnancy shirts fit me. Now my belly starts to show at the bottom and I know nobody wants to see that!

Best Moment of my week: Date night with my hubby! We went out to Panera and had a relaxing night together. After dinner we went to the mall and went shopping for the outfit we want to bring our sweet pea home from the hospital in. I wanted Jimmy to be the one that picked it out for her because I knew that would be special. He did a great job!

Worst moment of my week: Being tired and nauseous...never a fun part of life!

Sleep: I need more of it! I haven't really had insomnia or anything though so I can't complain!

Miss Anything:

Cravings: Fruit smoothies...I have one every morning!

Aversions: eggs, peppers and onions=yuck!

Gender: Still a girl! I have the doctor check every time to make sure lol. You can read about her gender reveal party here!

Belly Button: I can't hide it. It's there for the world to see!

Labor Signs: Braxton Hicks contractions. I learned the difference between those and real contractions at our birthing class last weekend. If you blow up a balloon part way and squeeze it in the middle, that's like a Braxton Hicks. If you squeeze it at the top, that's a real contraction because it puts pressure on the bottom of the balloon (the cervix). It finally made sense to me!

Other Symptoms: Much to my husband's horror, he says that I am "nesting". I am reorganizing everything and trying to make room for baby stuff in the nursery. Her nursery used to be our office space and my craft room. We have NO storage space anywhere so I have to be super organized with where I put stuff or it will drive me crazy! I found these little crates at Walmart for $1 and I think I may have bought like 15 of them. They work great for storage in small places though. Check it out!

Mood: Very tired, sometimes cranky, but mainly thankful to Jesus that I've had a pretty healthy pregnancy and that I have a healthy baby!

Looking Forward: Getting nursery projects done. Here's what I accomplished this week! Made two pillows for the rocking chair. The chevron pattern matches the curtains that I finished this week too. I will save that picture for when I get them put up though:)
I've got so many other fun projects I need to get working on too!
Thanks for following along with my pregnancy updates and for your sweet comments! I love reading each and every one of them!

You definitely don't want to miss this awesome birth story! Samantha's hubby is in the military and could only be home for a few weeks towards the end of her pregnancy. Crock Pot Chicken Tortilla Soup

Well I wasn't planning on sharing this recipe, but I got some special requests from some of my Facebook fans. Plus, my hubby really liked it, and since he is a pretty picky eater I figure that makes it worth sharing!
I actually made this one up on my own, taking ideas from here and there, and I love the way it turned out!

Chicken Tortilla Soup (Crock Pot Style)

-4 chicken thighs uncooked
-2 cans of diced tomatoes (undrained)
-2 cans of chopped green chilies (undrained)
-1-1/2 cup of chicken broth
-1 1/2 tsp of cumin
-1 can of kidney beans
-4 corn tortillas cut into thin strips
-avocado
-cilantro
-cheese
-sour cream

Place the chicken, tomatoes, chilies, beans, broth, and cumin into the crock pot and mix together. Heat on low for 6 hours, or high for 3 hours.
Shred the chicken using two forks.
Add the kidney beans and strips of corn tortillas and mix together. Add more chicken broth if desired.
*Note mine turned out more like chili because my hubby doesn't like brothy soups. It's all up to your own preference!

Serve with avocado, cilantro, cheese, and sour cream!
Enjoy!

34 weeks

I am sitting on the couch, drinking hot cocoa, trying to catch up on my blogging, and watching my belly bounce up and down because sweet pea has the hiccups AGAIN! This is definitely one of those moments where I take a step back and thank God for all of his blessings.

Over the past 34 weeks, both Jimmy and I have fallen in love with our daughter. We feel like we already know her! It's crazy how that works.
The way pregnancy and birth take place should be more than enough proof that there is a designer-God! How thankful I am to be able to rest assured that he has it all under control (even the scary parts, like labor)!

That brings me to my question of the day:
What are you/were you most afraid of in the pregnancy and birth process, and how did you prepare for it?

How far along? 34 weeks

Movement? She has a leg that has made it's home underneath my right rib cage. She likes to push out on my ribs and kick them so mercilessly! Little punk.

Weight Gain: 17 pounds

Maternity Clothes: You want to know something amazing? I have this pair of miracle jeans that still fit me from before I was pregnant. They are my favorite jeans to wear now because the maternity ones bug me. I can't get them to stay up with just that stretchy thing!

Best Moment of my week: We spent the weekend with our friends Matt and Nicole. Nicole got to feel her kicking a lot! I'm enjoying our little weekend trips while I can because I know we won't have them much longer.

Worst moment of my week: I've been getting nauseous quite a bit again:( No fun!

Sleep: I get a good night of sleep here and there, but my back has started to bother me a little and it's just hard to find a comfortable position ya know?

Miss Anything: My energy and being able to pick up heavy things! I am trying to get the nursery ready and it's hard to accomplish anything when I am not supposed to move furniture or lift heavy boxes!

Cravings: Chocolate and sweets...I am learning self-discipline!

Aversions: eggs, peppers and onions.

Gender: Still a girl! I have the doctor check every time to make sure lol. You can read about her gender reveal party here!

Belly Button: People are starting to point out my belly button's presence it's so obvious. You try stretching out your belly that much and keep your belly button from doing something weird!

Labor Signs: Still the Braxton Hicks contractions. They get a little bit more painful every time. That's ok though...I want to be prepared!

Other Symptoms: Stretch marks, fatigue, swollen ankles and hands, back pain, nausea-all completely worth it!

Mood: Tired tired tired. Nap please?

Looking Forward: Getting nursery projects done. Check out one of the tulle pompoms I'm making for the corner of her room!
I've got so many other fun projects I need to get working on too!
Thanks for following along with my pregnancy updates and for your sweet comments! I love reading each and every one of them!
