Would you give up your plans for His?

I've been reading through the New Testament for my devos lately. It's amazing how the Holy Spirit can use something that I've read several times over to teach me new things.
I was reading in Luke about Joseph and Mary headed to pay their taxes while Mary was pregnant. I got to thinking...

I would have been so ticked if I had to get up and ride on a donkey for days while I was 9 months pregnant. I mean...seriously?

Not to mention, I would have been freaking out if I was in labor and had no "plans" for where I was going to spend the night.

If my baby were born in a stable and had to lay in a manger rather than her perfectly pink nursery, I would have been appalled!

To be pregnant with no husband in the first place would have been hard to handle...but all that and more?

What if Mary just wanted a normal life? She was engaged to the man of her dreams, ready to get married, settle down with a nice house, and then have some babies.

She didn't sign up for all of that. But it's amazing to see her attitude in doing exactly what the Lord called her to do. She even sings a song of praise to the Lord when she finds out she's pregnant!
Would you be singing, or would you be upset that the plans you had for your life had been changed?

Although Mary was just a sinner like we are, I think we can learn from her example as she so obediently allowed the Lord to use her. I often tell God that I want Him to use me. But do I really mean it? Would I be willing to give up all of my own plans and dreams if he asked me to?

Sometimes I wonder if we really want God's plan for our lives...or if we just want Him to bless the plans we already have for ourselves.

Something to think about...

Colossians 3:17
And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

  1. Love this girl!! Mary was quite a woman!! :)

  2. This is such an excellent reminder, and Mary is just one in a long list of people God asked to give up their plans. (Moses, Abraham, the Disciples, Paul...) such a long list. I think we should consider it an honor when God finds us worthy!

  3. Love this as well girl. Yea Mary was an amazing woman with an amazing heart. We can all learn alot from her. and this is something to think about.

  4. I LOVE what you said here: "Sometimes I wonder if we really want God's plan for our lives...or if we just want Him to bless the plans we already have for ourselves."

When I think that Mary was just a young teenager it just blows me away. I can't even imagine! Her maturity and grace and God-heart was well beyond her years!

  5. Beautiful devotion faith. Thanks for sharing xo

  6. this is an amazing insight! definitely something we should all keep in mind! thanks for the great post!
