The Life Of A Homeowner

I've kept a big secret from you all for the past couple months. Not really intentionally, I just never found the time to share it officially!

We were pretty ecstatic to have purchased our very first home. Makes us feel like grown-ups...if having a baby didn't do the trick!

Needless to say, our life has changed drastically since purchasing the house. You see, it's a fixer upper, which could be code for you have no idea what you just got yourself into. We bought it as is, thinking we would just have to do a little cosmetic work. However, as we dug a little deeper, we found mold, asbestos, and other issues which resulted in us having to gut the whole thing.

So at the moment, owning a house is seeming a little overwhelming...especially for my poor hubby who works 10 hours a day and then heads to the house to work another 4-5 hours. He's quite the guy!

This week we finally started to dry wall, which makes it seem more like a home and not just a construction site.
I've started the daunting task of picking out paint colors! I'm definitely an amateur, so share your best painting tips with me!

I'm excited to see the finished project and can't wait to start decorating and make this place our home. I will do my best to keep you all updated on the progress!

  1. Congratulations! I work for a family owned hardware store and wrote a whole post on painting tips! It's here if you'd like to read:

I'm sure it's daunting redoing the whole house, but I hope you guys have fun along the way :) My only other tip would be to shop at a smaller local hardware store (if possible)rather than a big box one ;)

  2. Wow! It's going to be beautiful!

  3. that is so exciting! Congrats!!!!
Paint colors... I'm a neutral person and don't like much color. But there are people who like lots of color, like our previous home owners - each room was a different color... hehe.

Owning your own home is a big step!! Enjoy it :)

  4. Even though you ran into issues, this is such a fun project! Enjoy it :) Can't wait to see the progress

  5. Congratulations!!! I love your blog, especially since having a baby two months after you...seeing your monthly updates make me excited for what's coming next with my little pumpkin :-)

Oh my word, picking paint colors was the HARDEST part of fixing up our new house! I ended up choosing an object for each room that I loved and basing the color off of that (for instance, I found a really fun shower curtain for the bathroom and then decided that gray for the walls would compliment it really well). Then, since it's a tiny house, I just made sure that all of the colors blended between rooms so no one got a headache looking at the kitchen from the living room :-) I found approaching it this way to be a much less intimidating process than standing, paralyzed, in front of the intimidating WALL OF PAINT CHIPS at Lowe's!

    Happy painting!

  6. congrats on the new home! Our daughter just bought her first house and we're helping her fix it up too. I've written a few posts on it just recently. It's so fun to own your own land and building, even if it needs work, which all houses do! Here's hoping your house is filled with love and laughter and many, many memories!
