I was being Impersonated

There is no way to explain the way my stomach sank when I discovered that I was being impersonated.

Last night, I received an e-mail from a reader who came across a blog that was almost an exact replica of mine. The blog was even using the name Faith, and their "about me" page was a direct copy from my site. They were using my wedding photos and copying my posts word for word.

I had heard of this happening, but it was one of those things that I thought would never happen to me! I can't explain how upset I was; it wasn't even the fact that this person was stealing my work that scared me the most. It's just unnerving knowing that there is someone out there pretending to be me!

I am so thankful that I am a part of a Christian ladies blogger group on Facebook. I immediately went to them for support and they were AWESOME! They helped calm me down and figure out what I needed to do to shut down the blog impersonating me!

Now that the blog impersonating me is finally shut down, I want to share my experience with you so that you can avoid the same thing.

If you find yourself in this unfortunate situation like I did, make sure you contact blogger immediately. These forms were not easy to find, so I have posted them below. The first one is for the copyright of the posts and photos only. I sent links to my original posts and then to the copied ones on the fake blog so Google could see that she was stealing my stuff. The second link is to report someone using your name. All you do for that one is send in a photo of your driver's license and a link to the blog impersonating you. Although I filled out both forms, I think the Impersonation form was the one that ended up getting the fake blog shut down.

Impersonation on Blogger

I will be tightening up security on my blog from now on. You will notice that my photos are no longer able to be copied off of my blog. I will also be watermarking the photos I post to avoid something like this happening in the future. I hope if you haven't already, you will do the same!
Don't just assume it won't happen to you!

  1. OH NO! I'm so glad you got the other blog shut down! This is scary stuff! I'll be watermarking my photos from now on as well! Thanks for those links to the forms. I hope to never need them, but if I ever do, I know where to find them!

    1. Absolutely! Yes, it's better to take action now than pay for it later! I hope you never need them also!

  2. Faith, thank you for letting me know the same thing was happening to my blog. I have since taken action. Out of curiosity, how did you find my blog and subsequent impersonator? Thank you again! I really appreciate you contacting me!

    1. Hi Shira! No problem! I actually found it because there were comments from your fake blog on my fake blog. I'm guessing it was the same person who created both? The girl who let me know about it said the same thing had happened to her too where someone created a "fake" blog after hers. Hope you were able to get it resolved!

    2. I followed what you did, submitting the two forms online to blogger. Thank you so much again for letting me know. I would have had no idea! I am very weirded out by the whole thing and have since made my blog private until I the fake blog shuts down. Craziness! Anyway, thank you, thank you!

  3. yuck, that is horrible! that would make my heart sink too. I've had people take my free printables that I make available for my readers on my blog & put them on their websites, claiming they made them. I haven't done anything about it because with those I want people to get them & use them. (They are scripture prints). But it really makes your heart sink when there is no credit given & someone else is claiming it is their work. Sorry this happened to you!

  6. Thanks for posting the links - I'll pin it in case I ever need to know (hopefully I won't!). I'm sorry if happened to you. It makes me so mad. It's just another reason for me to worry about blogging, especially putting pictures of my daughter online. I just want to be able to post for myself, friends and family without worrying about people stealing photos or misusing content!

I'm glad you managed to get it sorted out

  9. I'm sorry, I hate reading these posts. Can you also share how to prevent photos from being copied?

  10. Why does someone do that? Do they make money?

  11. Scary! That would be so unnerving. I had a minor freakout a couple years ago and did everything possible to protect my photos. There's always ways for people to steal content if they really want to, but at least there's a way to shut them down if they do! Thanks for sharing the links!

  12. Wow that's creepy and scary.
I watermark my photos sometimes, but don't always remember. I should get better at that. And I'll have to look into how to keep the photos from being copied. I wish Facebook had that option.
