Guest Post from Mercola.com

I am excited today to have a guest post from Mercola.com, the world's #1 natural health website! I have visited the Mercola site many times as a great resource for natural health information. They cover everything from nutrition and fitness, to the health of your pets and home.

My hubby and I have been working hard lately to be healthier and care for the bodies God has given us. It's definitely a challenge, but great to have resources to guide us along the way. One of the biggest changes we have made is the way we eat. We have started eating fresh, organic foods and cutting out processed sugary foods. It sure makes a big difference!

What are some things you do to keep you and your family healthy?

The following article from Mercola.com discusses how what we eat is so important. If we aren't getting the proper vitamins and minerals it can be detrimental to our health. This is especially true of our children. Here's some great tips on how to take control of your child's health and make sure they are getting the proper nutrition through what they eat or even through supplementing!
 ------------------------------------------

Why Your Child May Be Deficient in Minerals

Many people may suffer from a certain type of deficiencyin minerals, such as zinc, iron, calcium, and magnesium, and have no idea that they do. Each of these minerals support an important function in your body, and having insufficient levels can give way to certain symptoms.
Unfortunately, these deficiencies can also happen in children. One of the most common reasons why this occurs is the quality of food you and your kids eat.

Mineral Deficiency Through Diet
Many children prefer eating processed food, such as fast food and soda, to eating healthful whole foods.
Advertisements deceive you by saying that these products are fortified with vitamins and minerals. Such products contain synthetic varieties of nutrients as well as artificial colors and flavors, preservatives, and other additives. They may also contain high amounts of calories, trans fat, and sugar, which all contribute to poor health.
On the other hand, other types of diet, like vegetarian/vegan diet and high-grain diets, can lower levels of trace minerals in your body. For instance, these diets have low zinc bioavailability because of their high amounts of phytic acids, which can impair absorption.

The Role of Soil in Supplying Minerals
While processed food is a poor nutrition source, whole foods may also be at risk for delivering inadequate nutrition.
Eating foods cultivated from mineral-deficient soil is a huge problem. Commercial or large-scale farming practices, like monocropping (the process of planting huge areas of land with the same crop year after year), deplete the soil of essential minerals.
According to an article in Time World, 40 percent of the world’s soil used for agriculture is categorized as degraded or seriously degraded. Because of unsustainable practices, the world is losing its fertile topsoil at a rate 10 to 40 times the rate it can be replenished.
The soil is also losing the microorganisms that make it better at nurturing crops and store water and nutrients. These beneficial microbes require carbon to survive, but they become deprived of it because of chemical fertilizer use, overgrazing, genetically modified crops, and other commercial farm practices.
It’s not a mystery why whole foods are depleted of minerals and why even whole foods are causing suboptimal health. One solution is to support farmers who use sustainable methods of cultivation. Organic food possesses a higher concentration of essential minerals that can promote proper body function. The cost of organic produce may be higher, but it’s a wise investment for your family’s well-being.

What Causes Ineffective Mineral Absorption?
It is possible that you are consuming adequate amounts of mineral dietary sources but are not absorbing them effectively. This can depend on your digestive health, specifically on your stomach’s supply of hydrochloric acid (HCL). Some minerals – such as zinc, iron, calcium, and magnesium – are dependent on your body’s supply of HCL, and may not be absorbed effectively with low levels of HCL.
Several reasons for decrease in the production of HCL include use of certain medications, like proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). Research has shown that PPIs inhibit the absorption of minerals, such as magnesium and iron. ACE inhibitors and thiazide diuretics can also deplete your body of trace minerals.
In order to avoid the use of medications in the first place, you need to optimize your and your children’s health. While drugs are manufactured to relieve disorders, they also have side effects on your health, specifically your digestive health, and may disrupt the natural healing capability of your body.

Sweet Pea is 2 months old!

Happy 2 months to my sweet baby girl!

Age: 2 months old!
Height: 22.5 inches (54th %tile)
Weight: 12 lbs, 2 oz (72 %tile)
Head: 39 cm (75th %tile)
(I'm glad her body is catching up with her head! Last month her head was in the 98th %tile lol)

Milestones:
One of the milestones for 2 months is responsive smiling. We definitely don't have a problem there!
Almost every time we talk to you you smile back! It's super sweet!

We have even gotten a few little squeals and giggles out of her!
She has been doing a great job working out those neck muscles too...check it out!
so last week we put her in the Bumbo Seat for the first time to see if she liked it.
She loved it! Now she sits in it for a little while every day and it cracks me up because she looks so stinkin' cute sitting up like that!

The day after Valentines Day, sweet pea rolled from her stomach to her back. No more tummy time for her now that she's figured that one out:)

Sleep:
We are still having a pretty hard time with this one! Sweet pea fights sleep like you wouldn't believe! We have learned that if we put her down after she yawns for the first time that it's a much easier process, but some days she only naps for a bout an hour or two total!
When she does sleep, thought, she's pretty stinkin' cute! Don't you think?

At night, she sleeps a 4-5 hour stretch and then is up again every 2.5 hours to eat. I have been trying different things to get her to sleep longer, but at this stage, I don't feel ready to let her "cry it out", especially when I know she is waking up to eat.

Best Moments:
We went on our first walk with Kaci and Madison. It was such a beautiful day and it felt great to get some fresh air. Your face peeking out of the stroller was pretty hilarious, though. You looked confused and mad. I think you need to get out more!
This was also a fun moment, although someday you may categorize it under your worst lol. Either way, I dressed you up like a cow and you were freaking cute!

Worst Moments: Those moments when you scream your little head off no matter what we do! It hasn't been happening as often, but when it does, it's heartbreaking. I think you get overtired and then won't let yourself fall asleep. I'm glad you want to stay awake with us, but it's no fun when you cry like that! Other then that, you give us far more best moments than worst moments!

Health: You've been kind of congested for a couple weeks now. We were worried, but the doctor said it's the up and down weather we've been having. One day it will be 65-70 degrees and the next day it will be in the 30's. I hope it goes away soon though because I hate using that sucking bulb to clear your nose out. From the sound of it, I'm thinking you aren't a big fan either.

Eating Habits: Definitely no problems there, and I praise Jesus for that. I'm so thankful that you eat well and are getting enough. You eat every 2.5 hours during the day and sometimes longer spaces between at night. My milk must be pretty awesome because you're getting chubby!
Last week, you were sleeping in your swing and your daddy walked over in front of you and said "wow she is getting fat!" You immediately started to cry lol! It was pretty funny that you acted so upset!

Special Memories:
Your first Valentines Day. Your daddy got you a sweet card and your first flowers! What a special girl:)
We went to dinner as a family and you did great! It was a sweet Valentines Day for sure!

We started using cloth diapers this month, just during the day when we are home.
Not gonna lie, it grosses me out a little bit, but I like that I'm saving a few bucks every day!

You had one of your first play dates a couple weeks ago with Josie and your cousin Madison. Even though you didn't really get much playing done, the three of you laid on the floor and smiled at each other and kept hitting each other. It was pretty cute!

You love your play mat! There's a little star at the top with a smiley face that plays music. I think you would talk to it all day if I let you! You smile and laugh at it too. You and that star are pretty good friends:)

You also recently found your hands! You love to twirl them around together and put them in your mouth. It's so cute seeing you trying to shove your little fist in your mouth!
It's been such a great month with you. I'm blessed to be your mommy sweet pea! I'm looking forward to all that month 3 brings:)

Does being a mom suck?

Does being a mom suck?
I know that sounds like a horrible question to even ask, but  last week I was talking with a close friend of mine who recently found out she was pregnant. She was telling me that when a lot of people find out she is pregnant, they begin warning her and telling her about all of the negative things associated with being a new mom. We've all heard it before, and maybe we are the ones saying it to that unsuspecting mom...

"Your life will never be the same"
"Sleep now, cause you never will again"
"Say goodbye to your sex life"
"Good luck fitting in your clothes ever again"
"There's nothing like stretch marks to ruin your bikini body"
"You will never have a moment to yourself again"

What is the message we are sending? Does being a mom really suck?

I will be the first to admit that being a first time mom is not easy. I've never been so tired in my life. But I've also never been so happy. All of those "negative" things listed above are way overshadowed by the joy that my sweet pea has brought into my life.

I know I am guilty of sharing the negative aspects of motherhood rather than sharing the joys. It's good to be reminded that the words we say and the attitude that we come across with in regards to motherhood can really damage or uplift someone else's perspective, especially a first time mom!

I am so thankful for the women in my life who love being moms and have shared that positive attitude with me. It's true, you can either focus on the sleepless nights, endless loads of laundry, the crying and the lack of time to yourself or you can focus on the snuggles, the smiles, the little noises, the love, and just the sweetness of being what your baby needs!

So if you are about to be a new mom and terrified of how hard it's going to be, just remember that how you look at your new role as a mom is completely up to you. Yeah, it could suck...but it could also be amazing!
What do I think about being a mom? Well, I'm sure you've figured that out from my previous posts, but I don't even have the words to describe how much I love my daughter and how much I love being a mother to her. Yes, there are hard moments, but I mostly just love it.

Happy Valentines Day!

Happy Valentines Day!
On a day where love is expressed with flowers, chocolate, teddy bears, and cards, let's remember how true love is to be expressed, not just on Valentines Day but every day!

Love is patient
Love is kind
Love does not envy
Love does not boast
Love is not proud
Love does not dishonor others
Love is not self-seeking
Love is not easily angered
Love keeps no record of wrongs
Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth
Love always protects
Love always trusts
Love always hopes
Love always perseveres
Love never fails
(1 Corinthians 13:4-8)

Let's also remember the greatest expression of love.

"But God demonstrated His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners,
Christ died for us."
(Romans 5:8)

Hope you have a day filled with love from Jesus, family and friends!

Love to you!

Baby Footprint Valentine Heart

I was so excited with how my first mom and me craft time with my 2 month old turned out. I'm a DIY girl at heart and a fun project like this one makes me feel like there's still a little bit of me left in the whirlwind that motherhood has brought on.

For this project, I bought a non-toxic, acid free stamp pad and after nap-time yesterday afternoon (time is an important factor here), I stamped her sweet little feet in the shape of a heart. She didn't put up a fuss at all...if only she new the DIY projects she has in store for her.

Now we made a mess making these, but it felt good to get back to crafting. Even more special was being able to include my little sweetheart and have an extra special reason to celebrate Valentines Day this year.
I used 3 different patterns of scrapbook paper from Hobby Lobby, some heart brads, and ribbon. I printed off the saying on card stock and her name for the bottom.
I just used a glue stick to glue it all together. Voila!

I made an extra one for her baby book as a sweet keepsake.
Happy Valentines Day!
