Is being a mom really that important?

Even before I became a mom, I had an inward struggle with significance. I tend to seek out my feeling of adequacy and acceptance in the world's eyes rather than in Gods. It's a fault that I readily recognize but still struggle with. Really, this post is just as much for me as for anyone else!

When our sweet pea was born, my hubby and I made the decision that I would be a stay-at-home mama.
I didn't want it any other way, and I am so grateful that God allowed us to be in a financial situation where that was possible.

However, over the course of the past 8 months, I have come to learn that to a lot of people, a woman without a real "career" is not considered successful.

Most of the time, stay-at-home moms are referred to as "just" a mom. As if that's all you do.....and it's really nothing.

When people ask me what I do or where I work, I often find myself hanging my head with shame and answering with the cliche phrase "oh, I'm just a mom."

Just a mom? I'm sweet pea's only mom and that's something that no one else can be!
When did being a mother change from being the highest calling to something that's an afterthought?

(Just as a side note, I believe that working mothers are also a part of this struggle to realize the importance of being a mom. I realize that not everyone is able to stay home with their babies and those women are just as much mothers as those who stay home.)

And so I struggle with feeling insignificant. Sure I change 10 diapers a day, spend a few hours a day feeding, reading books and playing with sweet pea, but does what I do really matter?

Maybe to the world, being a mom isn't that big of a deal, but I believe that to God it is. He even uses the love (comfort) of a mother to describe his own affections for us, his children.

As a mother comforts her child, so will I comfort you; and you will be comforted over Jerusalem."
Isaiah 66:13

We have the opportunity as mothers to be the love of God in our child's life.
Every time we comfort, love on, play with, cuddle, and speak truth into our child's life, we are showing them a glimpse of God's love.

Not to mention, at the end of the day, I'd rather have this sweet face looking at me knowing that I did the best I could to love and care for her than the approval of the world or any manager or boss.

More importantly, if I'm doing what God has called me to do, then nothing else matters.
I have come to realize that when I have a chance to serve my daughter or hubby, it's an opportunity to lay aside my self and serve the Lord.

Mathew 25:40 says "Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me."

In our society, children are regarded as "the least of these". While children used to be a blessing, they are no too often treated as a nuisance and an afterthought. I want to encourage moms to go against the norm and recognize that every time you lay down that project to answer a cry, or give up finishing that blog post to change a diaper, it's an opportunity to serve Christ and bring Him glory.
There really is no better "career" than that.

Anyone can be a successful businesswoman, doctor, banker, or even blogger, but I'm the one God has chosen to be sweet pea's mama. Nobody else can fill that role! It may not feel super significant, but in light of eternity, it is oh so important!

Be encouraged mothers! You are not only important to that little person in your life, but your work as a mom also has eternal value as you serve the Lord by serving your children.
May we never take our children or the chance to be their mama for granted.

Welcome back for another great week of Mommy Moments Link Ups! Thank you for linking up and for spreading the word last week! We love all of the great posts!

This week's most viewed link belongs to Gabrielle from MamaGab! Her post To The Discouraging Mom was one of my favorite posts that has ever been linked up here! I love Gabrielle's heart for her children even in the midst of chaos.

I hope I always choose to encourage other mothers and not point out the negatives of motherhood. That's one of the whole goals of Mommy Moments...to encourage one another!

Our guest host this week is Stephanie from Dreams Turned To Plans! Make sure you stop by and follow along with her today!

Sweet Pea s 8 months old!

Well it finally happened...mommyhood caught up with me and I'm over a week late on sweet pea's 8 month update! I didn't forget, it was just moving week last week. Enough said!
But here we are, a little late but just as cute!
This month was very challenging as we were working so hard to get our house ready. I had to drop you off with babysitters more often than I would have like just to get painting and other work done at the house.
I feel like I've missed out on a lot this month but I'm looking forward to making up for it this coming month!

Milestones: You are doing great at pulling yourself  up on things. I'm trying not to rush you on walking though, because from what I've read, the longer you crawl, the better!
You look adorable balancing on those chubby legs though! And you are just at the stage where you are getting into EVERYTHING!

You have really started to interact while reading books lately. You love to turn the pages and feel each page. You sometimes even squeal in response to seeing something you like. You especially love books that have mirrors in them!
You love seeing your reflection in mirrors!

You learned to blow kisses just a few weeks ago! Now you blow them to everyone you see. It's SO cute!
This month we have noticed your personality developing so much more. The expressions, gestures, and sounds you make are so much fun as you do your best to interact with us.
It has also become clear that you know what you want, when you want it and how you want it, that's for sure!

Eating: You have been doing great with solids. You have had so many new foods it's hard to remember them all. You still breastfeed every 4 hours which is still your main source of nutrition. I'm hoping to keep it that way till you are at least one. For now, food is just fun. I have started giving you more chunks of food on your highchair tray. You prefer that over being spoon fed. It's fun watching you eat on your own and chew up the soft pieces of broccoli, zucchini, peaches and more!
Here you are with your favorite...a mango!
You also love the little baby food pouches. I finally bought the kit to make them myself since I prefer making your food rather than buying it!

Your new favorite food that I gave you this month is egg yolks. I was nervous to try it, but you love it! I just fry or boil an egg and then cut it up into little pieces for you to eat.

Teething: I think teething could be a curse word...it's no fun for either of us! You have 2 cute little teeth on the bottom and are working on those top ones now! I have a healthy fear of your teeth...those things are wicked sharp! See those suckers?
This was the first photo I took of you where I noticed how grown up you are becoming. You are losing that baby look already (tear)!

Sleeping: When you are teething, you are up 4-5 times a night and sometimes just cry until you fall back to sleep. I know it's rough poor baby. When you aren't teething, you usually sleep about 10 hours a night and get up 1-2 times to eat. You take a nap at 10 and 2 and sometimes again around 5. I love the different positions you end up in while you sleep. I can't help but take pictures of you!
When you are trying to fall asleep you always have to stroke something whether it's your bed sheets or your blanket. It's sweet to see your little hand opening and closing. You also make a cute little sigh noise while you are falling asleep. Sometimes you do it so much, it sounds like you are humming.

Sizes: You have finally outgrown your 3-6 month outfits and are in 6-9 and even a few 12 month things now. You have tiny feet though. I had your feet measured to see what size you were and you are still a 1 1/2! It's ok though, I love your tiny toes:)

Memories:
We had family photos taken by our sweet friend Keren
We also had lunch with dad a few days. You are finally seeing more of him now that we are living in our new house!

You have a blast every time we go shopping with you now that you can sit in the front of the cart. You also blow kisses and wave at everyone we pass. You are a little sunshine!

We went to family fun day at the Zoo where you saw bubbles for the first time. You were intrigued!

You also went to your first baseball game this month. Woohoo!
Photo: Kaleigh's first baseball game!! #gootters

Looking Forward To:
I'm still waiting to hear you say mama. You know that's who I am, but you haven't learned how to make the "m" sound yet. It won't be long though!

Even though summer is almost over, we are looking forward to enjoying what's left of it. We are hoping to go camping with you soon when the weather cools down a bit!
My sweet daughter, I treasure every moment with you, even the middle of the night ones. I love your sweet kisses and hugs and even the way you growl a little when you don't like something. I love the way your hair curls when it's humid and the way your arms flap when you get excited! Your smiles and squeals melt my heart. Your daddy and I sometimes just look at you in amazement at how sweet and adorable you can be, and then shake our heads at how rotten you can be as well:) We pray for you that you will grow up to be a godly woman, that you will challenge all that energy you have towards doing something great for Jesus.
May we never take a moment for granted. They are all passing by too quickly.
I love you so very much...
...and I love being your mama
