Are all excuses bad?

I'm a little late to this topic, but I'm sure most of you have seen the photo of Maria Kang showing off her perfectly toned body surrounded by her 3 year old, 2 year old and 8 month old. The caption across the top read "What's your excuse?"
(I'm not going to share the photo, but feel free to look it up if you haven't seen it already.)

As a mom of a 10 month old, this photo caught my attention...mainly because I only have one child and my body does NOT look like that!

Typically, I'm not one to dive into controversies...mainly because I'm extremely non-confrontational! It can be a good thing and a bad thing, but ultimately it's the safe thing to do in the blogging world. However, when it comes to topics related to motherhood, I've decided it's time for me to use my voice a little more. So agree or disagree, here's what I thought of Maria Kang's controversial photo.

Although I would have preferred to see Maria with just a little more clothing on (especially considering she is surrounded by her sons), I do not want to condemn her or the photo. There are mamas attacking on both sides and that's not what this post is about. I commend Maria for reaching her fitness goal!

However, I disagree with her insinuation that looking that toned 8 months after having a baby should be everyone's goal, and there is no good excuse. If she had simply posted the photo and left out the caption, that would have been much more inspirational and much less attacking. I would argue that there are some very VALID excuses for not looking like Maria.

1. There are health issues many mamas face. Yes, they can still live healthy, but looking like Maria is just not an option, especially with babies to care for.

2. Some children are much needier than others and a lot of mamas don't have help in caring for them. In between doctors appointments, soccer games, and more, many mothers don't really have the time to spend in the gym.

3. It's not everyone's priority to look like that, and that should be OK. Yes, every mom should find time to care for herself and keep her individuality, but with that individuality allows for mom to do things that she enjoys, even if working out isn't one of them.

None of these are reasons to not be healthy. I believe living a healthy lifestyle is an option for everyone, while looking like Maria is not.

Most importantly, I believe our bodies belong to the Lord. He made each of us unique yet very special to him. While that's not an excuse to not be fit, the Bible is clear that our focus is not to be on our outward appearance but rather on the heart (1 Samuel 16:7).  We are, however, to care for our bodies with a realization that they belong to the Lord and are for his glory, not our own.

1 Corinthians 6:19-20
19 Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? 20 For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.

The beauty in this is that at the end of the day, if you have done your best to eat healthy, exercise, and care for your body, you still may not look like Maria (gasp!), but you are bringing glory to God.
That matters much more than looking hot :)

Ultimately, I do believe that Maria was hoping to inspire mothers all across Facebook to get in shape and start working toward's their goals. Could she have accomplished that in a less offensive way? Probably! But instead of attacking her, let's support her as a fellow mom who has worked hard to get to where she's at! Seeing our bodies as the Lord's is a great reminder to stop comparing, and instead embrace who God made us to be. Each unique, each loved, each special in our own way with individual dreams, strengths, weaknesses and talents.

Psalm 139:14
I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made!

Diamond Candle Giveaway!

Diamond Candles are the newest thing in candles and are tons of fun if you ask me!
With over 30 unique scents, it is hard to chose just one. And the best part is that every candle has a ring hidden down inside the wax worth anywhere from $10 to $5k!
Sound too good to be true? Well, Diamond Candles sent me one to try out just for you.
I will let you in on a little secret...I intentionally postponed my choosing of the candle for this review because I knew I wanted the Pumpkin Chai scent.
It was definitely worth the wait!
Pumpkin Chai Candle

I started burning my candle the second it came in the mail and YUMMMM it was delicious!

I'll admit that I was so excited to find the ring hidden in the wax that I kept burning it until I could see it!
I left it there for a few days just because I liked the suspense. Yeah, I know I'm weird!
When I finally was able to grab it, I was so excited! It was wrapped in a tiny plastic bag and then with a layer of foil

Even thought it isn't a real diamond, I absolutely LOVE the ring I found inside. Check it out! The yellow center stone is perfect for a fall wardrobe!
I couldn't be more excited to offer you the chance to win your very own Diamond Candle and ring! Just enter via the widget below and tell your friends to stop by and enter too!

Our Sweet Pea is 10 months old!

Happy Ten Months Sweet Pea!
(This headband is a replica of one that is for sale in my new Etsy shop called Daisy Designed)

Milestones
This month we noticed you becoming WAY more vocal. You know how to make the lion and the kitty noise. It's hilarious when you "roar"! Here's a list of the words you say so far!
mama
dada
byebye
tickle tickle
doggie
woof woof
roar
meow
The cutest thing yet is when you say tickle tickle (sounds more like "tickoo tickoo") and reach your little hands up under mama or dada's chin to tickle us. It's the most adorable thing!
video
You have also learned to respond to the word "no" and are usually very obedient when we tell you not to touch something. We are still working on the fits you throw when you have to go to sleep though. You can be a feisty little thing!
You are the proud owner of 4 teeth now! Two on the bottom and two on the top. They. are. sharp. You bit me a few weeks ago and it got so infected I had to go on antibiotics. You have been warned...if it happens again, I am considering weaning you, and you probably will not like that.

I think you will be walking on your own soon...you do such a great job with your walker! Here's a video of you from 3 weeks ago!

Sleeping
Sleeping has been rough for us this past month. Part of the reason is because of your teething. You wake up SCREAMING and won't settle down unless I breastfeed you. It's definitely wearing on me, so we need to figure something out. Any mamas out there have a natural teething pain reliever?

Eating
You are an eating champ! You are still breastfeeding 4x a day and usually 2x a night. I think your favorite time of day is when you get to set down for dinner with mom and dad and eat grown up food! We started giving you shredded chicken this month and you seem to enjoy it a lot! The challenge for me is to try to cook healthy enough that I can give you little pieces of what we are eating. I've been a stickler about sugar, white flour and things that don't have nutritional value!

Special Memories
You have started to give hugs and snuggles to mom and dad and...well...pretty much anything. You were hugging a paper plate just a second ago. You especially love to give your stuffed animals and dolls big kisses on their noses!

Grandpa and Buela came to visit this month as well! They were a lot of help on our house and you had fun getting to know them a little better as well:)
It was beautiful weather so we went on a picnic!
You loved reading books with Abuela!
And Grandpa had fun taking pictures of your sweet face:)

Your personality has exploded this month and you have really started to interact a lot more as well!
Of course we cant help but laugh every time you dance. It's too cute!
video
You and your cousin Madison are best buddies these days. You even play chase together and there are lots of giggles involved! We took the two of you to a street festival and before too long, the two of you were completely worn out...leading to this cuteness!

You also got to play in a play place at your cousin's birthday party. You thought it was the coolest thing that you could see mom from way up there!

You and your dad have developed a pretty close bond this last month. You love it when he plays with you and especially when he gets his guitar out. You even try to play along!

Just last week we went on a hayride to the pumpkin patch with some friends. You proved to be a real country girl at heart just like your mama. You got to drive a tractor and everything!

Dear sweet pea,
You bring dozens of smiles to my face every single day with your hugs and kisses, the cute faces you make and the silly things you do! You are so full of personality! You make being a stay-at-home mama the best job in the world for sure. I'm excited to watch you grow and discover the world as you are already. We pray for you each night that you will grow to be a woman of God and love and serve Him. I can't wait to see what month 11 brings! Love you baby!
Love, mama.

How To Paint Kitchen Cabinets

I was so nervous to paint my kitchen cabinets. I hated the drab wood, but the thought of taking them all apart to paint them just didn't sound fun to me. Not. At. All.
Last week my mom came and without hesitation we dove right into the project. We started it one evening thinking it would just take a day or two.
 Ha. Nope
! It took almost a week, but I couldn't be happier with the final result!
We started off this kitchen party by removing all of the handles and hinges. Please do as I say and not as we did and put those 50 screws in a safe place so you don't lose them. I promise you will like having them all at the end to put the chaos back together again.
Next, we wiped the cabinets down with liquid sandpaper. It comes in many forms but any sort of deglosser that strips the wood of it's oils to prepare the surface for the paint will do! Just make sure you have some form of ventilation or you may see things that aren't really there!
Next, we laid the cabinet doors all across my kitchen and slapped on some wood primer. It's tricky to get in all the grooves and catch those drips before they dry so make sure you take a double check around after you are finished.

This type of project is a wee bit trickier with a 9 month old. We had to strategically do the painting while she was eating or sleeping! Here's a peek at our set up!

After the primer on both sides had dried overnight, we started putting the paint on. I used straight up white from Sherwin Williams in the ProClassic Satin Finish and I love how they turned out against my gray walls!
We used a sponge roller for the centers of the cabinets, a brush to go around the edges and trim and did 2 coats on both sides just to make sure we got good coverage!
Needless to say, my kitchen was an absolute wreck while this project was underway. There were drawers and cabinet doors propped up all over the kitchen and dining room.
Once both sides were nice and dry, I went to work putting everything back together!

It was so worth the few days of craziness to have a beautiful and bright kitchen! It made such a difference and I'm so glad that my mom was here to help make it happen!
