A New Year's Resolution that Matters

Every year I make several New Year's resolutions. We all do it. There's something about a fresh start that is motivating and inspirational!

In the past years, my New Year's goals have been to eat better, work out more, be a better wife, friend, be more disciplined in my quiet time etc...
This year, as I was pondering the New Year and all of the things I want for myself, I realized that my goals were very "me" oriented. They have always been about making me happy or making myself a better person.
There's nothing wrong with that, but the pattern I've noticed in years past is that I always end up disappointed.

Le'ts be honest, I quit working out after about week 3.
There's no humanly possible way to resist chocolate, so you can throw eating healthy out the window, and without chocolate, I will always make mistakes as a wife and mother. Ok, that happens even without chocolate, I admit.

So this year, I've decided to make my New Year's Resolution something that isn't about me. I'm done making silly promises to myself just to give up after the first month because I've already failed.

This year, my goal is worth much more than looking good, being healthy, or being a good person. It has eternal value!

My New Year's Resolution is to live each day to bring glory to my Father in heaven.

1 Corinthians 10:31
So whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God

1 Corinthians 6:20
...for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.

There is so much freedom in this resolution! Even on a day that I barely make it out of my pj's much less make it to the gym, I can keep this resolution. I don't have to be disappointed in myself at the end of a lousy day if I can look back knowing that the way I lived that day was glorifying to the Lord!

In some ways maybe this goal is a little bit more difficult than others. It's a lot easier for me to eat a healthy meal than it is to have a good attitude when my toddler colors all over my newly painted cabinets (true story!).
But the nice thing about this resolution is that I don't have to throw it out even if I fail one day. I can wake up the next day with a fresh start just like the beginning of a new year!

Lamentations 3:22-23 says,
The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new EVERY MORNING; great is your faithfulness.

So for all you busy mamas out there, let's make a more reasonable goal for 2014. Now keep in mind, that part of you glorifying God in 2014 may include working out, eating healthy, and working on your role as a wife and mother. But when your focus is on the Lord rather than on yourself, those things are worth much more!

Let's give 2014 to God and watch together what He does in our lives as we give Him glory!

Psalm 34:3
Oh magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt His name together!

Hey mamas!
Welcome back for another great week of Mommy Moments Link Ups! Thank you for linking up and for spreading the word last week! We love all of the great posts!

Motherhood has it's seriousness and frustration as well as it's laughs. That's why we are here. Life is much easier when traveled with companions! So mamas, let's join together in the spirit of motherhood and share our moments together.  This week's most viewed link belongs to Cara from The Building of a House and a Family. Her post titled Santa is Just For Fun went right along with our Christmas week. There are so many fun things about Christmas, including Santa, but I think that Cara gets it right when she says Santa is just for fun at Christmastime. The real reason for Christmas is Jesus!

Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas!

I can't help but think back to where we were a year ago today. Last year on Christmas Day, we were bringing home the sweetest gift we could ask for, our daughter.

And here we are 1 amazing year later, still thanking God for the sweet, spunky and beautiful daughter he gave us!

As I reflect on the true meaning of Christmas, I've realized that having a child has really helped me to understand Christ's love at a deeper level. The fact that God's love for us was so great that he was willing to send His only son Jesus here to earth to pay the price for our sins is mind blowing to me. That has to be a beyond powerful kind of love that I can't even fathom.
As easy as it is to get caught up in the family, presents, food, and all the other things that Christmas brings, let's remember that this time of year is to celebrate love; the powerful love of God that was merciful enough to send us a Redeemer in the form of a baby. Without Jesus, we would have no hope. There would be no reason to celebrate! If we truly believe that, let's be mindful of that today as we celebrate the birth of Christ!

Wishing you all a very special day with your friends, family and whoever you choose to spend this Christmas with!
And to all the mamas out there, wishing you a silent night :)

Year in Review

This past week has been bittersweet for me as I have spent a lot of time going through K's photos and reminiscing on the amazing year we've had with her. It's hard to believe 12 months have gone by so quickly and we now have a little toddler on our hands!
Here's a review of her year in photos...

Happy Birthday Baby!

Our baby is ONE!

Happy Birthday sweet girl!
I can't believe you are a year old. I am happy and sad at the same time! I'm happy that you are growing so well and are so much fun and I'm sad that time has gone by so quickly and I know it will only start to go faster!
This doesn't seem like a year ago...
But here we are...celebrating your first year! It has been far more amazing than I ever imagined. I thank God for you every single day. I have done my best to cherish each moment with you and we have made a lot of sweet memories with you!

Milestones:
Just this week, you got really good at taking steps! You are still a bit wobbly but you get better every day! I can't believe you are walking now! Your record steps in a row is 10 steps!

You are getting to be quite the talker. You have also picked up several signs which has made things easier figuring out what you want. You sign "eat", "more", "milk", "no", "please", and "all done". .
Your new word this month is "this". You say "this" like 100 times a day as you point at things you want or like. It's pretty cute! Sometimes you just clap your hands and giggle for no apparent reason. I'm glad you are such a happy little thing!
You can also say hi, bye, mama, dada, tickle tickle, moo, dog, woof woof, roar, bath, as well as a bunch of babbly words we can't make out yet.

One of my favorite things is when you sing and dance with your dad. When he sings to you, you sing a long in the sweetest little voice I've ever heard. You also love to dance with him...or anyone for that matter! You've still got your moves!

You have 5 teeth now and are working on your 6th! Teething is not a fun process. I feel so bad for you when you are in pain!

Eating:
When you are hungry, you smack your mouth together or make the "eat" sign. We have learned that we are not allowed to eat around you without sharing. You just will not tolerate that nonsense! So we have become really great at sneaking food when you can't see haha!
You started using a spoon to feed yourself this month. I was seriously standing in front of you thinking...."how long is she going to eat everything with her hands?" and then you picked up your spoon like a big girl and ate your mashed potatoes with the spoon. Well your face ate them at least...and your mouth got some too:)
You are still breastfeeding 4 times a day and twice a night. You also have 3 meals a day and 2 snacks. Even still, you always seem to be hungry. You are a bottomless pit!

Sleeping:
Enough said, right? You are adorable when you sleep. Getting you there is still a process though! We think you may have a sleep issue as you still aren't sleeping through the night and we have a really hard time getting you to nap.
You get up anywhere from 2-5 times a night, going to sleep around 8 and waking up for good around 7. We still try to get you to take 3 little naps every day because it seems you need them to be in a good mood. I'm hoping your sleep habits improve as you get older though!

Memories:
Snow day! You had your first experience in the snow. The Minnesota girl in your mama was thrilled to have all this snow. This was your face when I showed you the snow out the window. Priceless!
So we went out to play in it of course, but not for long because it was pretty cold!
We had a baby sled that our friend Amanda so sweetly gave you and we went for lots of rides in the snow before it finally melted. It was so much fun!

You have a lot of fun in the kitchen while mama is cooking or doing dishes. Look what I found in the cupboard the other day...cutest sack of flour there ever was!

Uncle Abe came to visit the day after Thanksgiving and you had a blast with him. He automatically became your favorite when he read you a book! You love to read!

Your favorite books are the ones with animals in them. You love lions and cows! Here's a video of you as a lion. Pretty scary huh?

Your newest favorite thing to do is to draw whether it's on your chalkboard, or all over mama's newly painted cabinets. Yep, I guess that's one of the telltale signs that there's a toddler in the house! Who knows, your daddy thinks you may be the next Picasso!

You also visited the Children's museum for your cousin's birthday party. While we were there, a random man came up and wiped your nose with his handkerchief. I couldn't believe it, but he was gone before I knew what to say. I was mortified! Who does that, I mean really! But regardless, you had a blast playing with all of your cousins.

You have told us in not so many words...or rather in a lot of babbly words that you think you are old enough to have a cell phone so you can talk to your friends. You like to chat it up on any sort of phone shaped device. Don't worry, we are getting you a phone for Christmas...a fake one anyways :)

You went to your first baby shower this month. It was for my best friend Nicole. We are so excited that she's having a little boy in February! We can't wait to meet him!

If you weren't a daddy's girl before, you sure are now! You cry when he hands you back to me and get so excited when he gets home from work. You are so sweet to him and always give him lots of hugs and kisses which he loves!

We took you shopping the other day for your Christmas and Birthday gifts and we found out that bringing you along was a big mistake. You wanted EVERYTHING you saw and you kept saying "dis, dis, dis" and then pointing at yourself so we were sure to know that you wanted what was on those shelves. You were so crazy that we didn't get much shopping done at all! We are leaving you with Aunt Natalie next time we go shopping in the toy section!

It's been fun reflecting on last year around this time. How amazing it was getting to meet you just before Christmas and then bringing you home on Christmas day. Christmas will always be extra special to us because of that! I love making Christmas memories with you!

Your first birthday card came in the mail this week from your abuela and I wish I had captured your face when I handed you the envelope. You always want the mail so it was sweet to see how excited you got that you had your own card.

My Letter To You:

Our sweet miss K,
What an amazing year this has been. It seems like yesterday I was holding you in my arms for the very first time and filled with a new, powerful kind of love. I remember how excited your dad and I got about your first smile, and how we bragged about how well you were holding your head up. I can still hear those first baby giggles, oh how they made us smile! I remember watching you try so hard to roll over for the first time and how proud I was of you when you finally mastered it. I thought it would be forever before I would hear you call me mama until one day you said it and melted my heart! Then I blinked and you were crawling...everywhere...and getting into everything. It's been a whirlwind from there as you learned to talk and then took your very first steps. What an exciting life this has been with you in it! Over the past year you have learned to smile, laugh, roll, sit up, crawl, eat, drink, talk, walk, give hugs and kisses, and best of all, how to love. You are definitely a one-of-a-kind girl. You are so very special to us and I can't wait to get to know you more as your little sassy personality develops. I still refuse to call you a toddler...you will always be my baby girl. I love you so much! Happy 1 year!

Hand print Christmas Ornaments

The past few weeks, I took on a job as a nanny for a good friend of mine. I watch her 2 year old, 4 month old and then my 1 year old! It's a full house and we have lots of fun together.
This last week we took on the classic project of making hand print molds. Although none of the kids were able to help much, we still had fun and the molds turned out beautifully!
Here's the recipe I used:

2 cups of flour mixed with 1/2 cup of salt
Slowly add 3/4 cup of water with a few drops of green food coloring mixed in. I only put a few because I was going for a minty look rather than green green if you get what I mean.
Make sure you mix in the food coloring with the water before you pour it in the flour mixture though or it takes forever to get it mixed in the dough. I may have learned that the hard way :)
Knead together until the dough is soft and pliable.

Roll the dough until it is about 1/4 inch thick and then make your hand or foot print. Then us a cup or round object to cut around the print.
Ues a straw or round object to make a hole in the dough if you are making a Christmas ornament.

Place the cut outs on a cookie sheet and bake at 200 for several hours until the dough has completely hardened. It seriously takes forever!

Let the prints cool completely and then paint along the hand print to make it stand out. Let that dry and then seal the entire ornament (front and back) with 2 coats of modge podge. That will ensure that the ornament isn't exposed to air and molds.

Last of all, just place a pretty ribbon through the hole at the top and enjoy this special Christmas ornament for years to come!
