The right time for baby #2, and responding to other's opinions

My daughter has officially passed the 18 month mark which, come to find out, is when most people assume you should be pregnant with your second child! I can't tell you how many times I have been asked,
"when are you going to have a second?"
or the more subtle (or not so subtle) hint,
"You know your sweet pea would make a great big sister, right?"

I know my daughter would make an amazing big sister, and I think I look forward to baby #2 even more than I did with my first baby not just because it will make sweet pea a big sister, but because I know how wonderful being a mom is and what a joy and blessing kids are!

Although I am excited for God to bless us with another baby, the question of when the right time is to have a second baby is something that is a private decision. After all, you are the one who's life it really affects! It's one thing to have a fun discussion about plans for the future with friends, but I know I myself have been guilty of just tossing this question out there to people who I don't even know that well without realizing that I am not fully aware of their situation and could be bringing up a sensitive or even painful topic for them.

The fact of the matter is that it is not about what statistics say is the best age gap between kids, what society expects, what your friends think you should do, or even what those around you are doing. It's between you, your spouse, and then ultimately the Lord. I remember right around when sweet pea turned one, I had a talk with my hubby about having a second baby. I just didn't feel ready. I was enjoying my daughter so much and not knowing what to expect with pregnancy just made me uncomfortable with the idea of trying at that time. So we waited.

The ironic thing about family planning is that it ultimately isn't in our control anyways. We may decide that we are ready, while God has other plans.

So when others share their opinions and advice on baby #2, although at times their comments can be hurtful, I try to respond politely and with grace that we are waiting on God's perfect timing!

  1. LOVE your post and it so true! God knows when the perfect time is! :)

    1. Thanks Jamie! Yes, I'm so glad that He is in control, and not me :)

  2. Such sweet and true words! The pressures that other family members can put on you is sometimes overwhelming, but it's ultimately up to God if we'll have another baby. Thanks for bringing up this topic!

  3. Wonderful post - no matter how hard we try to plan, God has the ultimate and perfect plan for our families and lives! For my husband and I, we decided we wanted to try for Baby #2 last year and are still waiting. It hurts, especially when people ask about another baby, but I find rest in knowing that this just isn't God's time for us to be pregnant again.

    1. Amy, I know how hard that can be, and I'm so sorry that you've had to go through that struggle. But I'm glad you are able to rest in God's perfect plan and know that He will bless you with a baby in His timing if that is his will. *hugs*

  4. I agree with this 100%! It's mainly God's decision and timing and we just have to have faith that it will work out for the best!

    1. Yes, it is sometimes hard to have faith, but it's good to be reminded that He is in control! Thanks Courtney!

  5. I wish everyone in the world would read this post! People mean well, but they unknowingly ask the most ignorant questions.
