Better than coffee

If you are anything like this mama, you stumble into the kitchen on those early mornings and brainlessly put on a pot of coffee with a heartfelt "Thank you Jesus, Amen!"

It's like a second nature survival habit, right? Coffee is kind of like our life source for the day. For most of us, it helps wake us up and just makes us all around nicer people. Truth.

Coffee has become a habit for me. I can tell when I haven't had it. I just don't feel right.

Another habit I have been trying to form is spending time with my Jesus. And the crazy thing is that spending time with my Lord and Savior actually has a much stronger effect on my day than my cup of coffee. Spending time with God fills me with His Spirit and changes my heart.

When I don't make time to spend in God's word every morning. I just don't feel right.

I recently read this verse and even though I've read it countless times before, this time it meant something new to me:
John 15:5 "I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.

Apart from me you can do nothing.

Why do we ever try to make it through the day without being connected to our vine, our life source, our Savior? Branches need the vine in order to be fruitful. In the same way, we need the Holy Spirit in our lives in order to be truly fruitful.

Devotions have always been a challenge for me. Even after writing posts about the importance of spending time with Jesus, I still have found myself in seasons where I just didn't make the time for the Lord.

You see, I always knew it was good to spend time with the Lord every day, but I never saw it as a life-source, a necessity for daily life. Dare I say, even more important than my morning cup of coffee? Yes, much more important!

Spending time with Jesus changes us. He becomes the reason we joyfully clean up the spilled cereal on the floor, wipe the snot from our toddler's nose and tackle the mountain of dirty dishes in the sink. Only when we have taken time to be loved by our heavenly Father do we truly have love to offer others.

"The love of Christ in her heart is what overflows when a mother speaks kindly to her children even when they don't speak kindly back...The love of Christ controls us as we speak the words of the gospel of hope to our children time and time again. The love of Christ convinces mothers not to live for themselves (or their children) but to live for him, who for their sake died and was raised (2 Corinthians 5:15)" -Gloria Furman
I share this truth out of excitement for how it has changed my life...the daily monotony of life has purpose when I'm walking hand in hand with Christ. I desperately want that for each of you!

He is better than coffee...because the life and joy that comes from Him will last for eternity, no caffeine headache involved!

And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

  2. That's a great quote from Gloria Furman. This is a great post full of reminders that it's not us who live but Christ through us...hopefully!
