Jesus Time for Mamas

I was not very disciplined about having my time with the Lord before I had a baby, so once my sweet daughter was born, as you can imagine, it seemed impossible.
However, since K was born, my Jesus time has become much more important to me. I need it, trust me. Even just 15 minutes alone with the Lord helps me to be more loving, patient, hard working etc. The time with the Lord definitely makes me a better mom and wife.
So you see, it's not an option to go without it!

Here are some secrets I've learned to ensure quiet time, even for a busy mama.

1. Schedule Your Time
I know it may not seem as genuine if it is scheduled, but if it's not planned, it's probably not going to happen. You will get caught up in your busy day and before you know it, you will be way too tired to read a word.

2. Have a Backup Plan
If your scheduled time is while the kids eat breakfast, what happens if you get an important phone call and aren't able to be in the Word? Well, instead of just throwing it all out the window, have a plan B.
I have three possible times in the morning that I can have quiet time. If I miss one, I don't have to worry! There's 2 more chances!

Here are the 3 scenarios that work for me. It may not be the same for you, so you just have to find what works for you!

During breakfast
Sometimes I take this opportunity to include my daughter in my time with the Lord by reading her a chapter of the Bible. She loves it when I read to her, and I'm hearing the Word of God at the same time!

Bath time
Before you jump to conclusions, let me assure you that I do not leave K in the tub alone. I do however, sometimes stash my Bible and journal in the bathroom and while K is splashing away and enjoying her tub time, I can be right there but having some time with Jesus. It can be a little distracting, but you are still making opportunity for the Lord to speak into your life from the Bible.

Nap Time
This is most definitely the best time as there are no distractions, and it's easy to just focus on the Lord and your time with Him. Even if I've had some time during breakfast or bath time, I still try to take some time alone during K's nap to pray and just enjoy some quiet with the Lord, if you know what I mean!

3. Stick to it, EVEN if you don't feel like it
There are days when I'm exhausted and have a"to do" list that seems impossible. On those days, I don't really feel like reading my Bible. I know that I don't have to spend time with the Lord for Him to love me, but I also know that day will go 10x better if I've started it off right. Spending time with the Lord gets my heart in the right place and when my heart is in the right place, my actions follow.
The Bible is one of the main ways that God speaks to us. If we aren't reading His word and spending time with Him, we aren't able to grow closer to Him and understand His will for our lives.

Even on a rough day, you can step away from the chaos, frustration and whatever else you may be feeling and be reminded that you are chosen and precious in the sight of the God of the universe. Nothing is more important than that!

Mommy Moments #79

Hey mamas!
Welcome back for another great week of Mommy Moments Link Ups! Thank you for linking up and for spreading the word last week! We love all of the great posts!

Motherhood has it's seriousness and frustration as well as it's laughs. That's why we are here. Life is much easier when traveled with companions! So mamas, let's join together in the spirit of motherhood and share our moments together. We want to hear the happy, sad, tough, terrible, hilarious moments that make being a mother the best job in the world!

This week's most viewed link belongs to Brittany from Sweet Country Roots. Her post was my favorite last week as well as she addressed the question we all dread "Are You Having More Kids?"
It's time we stop letting our culture tell us how many kids is "appropriate". That is something between ourselves, our spouse and the Lord!

First Month With Our One Year Old

Can I just say that being one must be awesome?
At least that's how you make it seem. I have never smiled or laughed so much in my life as I watch you enjoy the world around you. Maybe it just got better because you learned to walk!
Yup! The week you turned one, you decided you weren't a baby anymore and your toddler days were born. Here are your first 10 steps in a row!
video

You also decided that since you are a big girl now that you would learn to talk. You have gotten great at communicating and you are learning new words every day!

Words you know so far:
hello, hi, bye, no, yes, this, mama, dada, baby, eat, dog, fish, woof, moo, meow, neigh, baaa, quack, whoo, vroom vroom (car noise), bath, eye, and ball.

You've gotten really good at trying to repeat what we say. It doesn't always sound like the word but you are trying really hard!

We had a fun Christmas with you in Minnesota! You were so cute in your little Christmas outfit!

It was so fun to see playing with my family and your little cousins!

Don't worry, we also made time to stop and visit mama's cows on the farm. Of course!

You are still a daddy's girl. This is one of my favorite and most nerve-wracking photos as the two of you shared a bowl of spaghetti on our new couch. No stains though and we got a cute photo out of it all!
You are also newly obsessed with my women's hospital cup.  It is a pretty awesome cup...I had to give birth to you to get it! I didn't even know you knew how to drink out of a straw but apparently the big kids taught you that when I wasn't looking! You are seriously the cutest ever.

Your absolute favorite thing to do is watch the Veggie Tales theme song. If we even mention it, you squeal and dance!
Here's you dancing to it for the first time!

video

When we were in Minnesota, you finally got to experience the best sport ever: ice skating!

The month of January it has been pretty cold here but you've kept busy by finger painting, visiting the zoo, going to the park and playing with your friends. Man you are a busy 1 year old!
That big cat wanted to eat you, but I kept you safe!

My favorite thing you do now is wink...with both eyes. Anytime someone winks at you, you scrunch your face up all cute and try to wink back! My favorite.

It seems like we have had every cold and flu out there this past month, so it's only fitting that you should learn to blow your nose!
video

Just last week, our friend Nicole came to visit. She's going to have her baby boy any day and I'm sure you will have lots of fun playing with him as he get's bigger. You had fun reading books, playing with Nicole, and giving her lots of hugs and kisses.

And if this doesn't make a person laugh, I don't know what will. You have so much fun playing with your daddy and picking on me! It's worth hearing that belly laugh and watching you have the time of your life. I love it!
video

This past month has been extra busy because I have been taking you with me to nanny. I watch a 2 year old girl and a 5 month old boy. You love playing with her and that makes the job even better! I'm glad I can bring you with me!

You also discovered your musician side when I took you down in the basement to pound on our old piano. I didn't know how much you would love it! You alternated piano playing with dancing and even a little singing! I hope you never lose your love for piano and I can't wait to teach you what I know!
video

This update definitely doesn't do your fun personality justice, but I will leave you with this photo to sum it all up. Happy 13 months girlie!

To my sweet baby, or should I say toddler? I have watched you change so much this past month. It's been bittersweet as I slowly have to admit you are no longer a little baby and can do many things on your own. After learning to walk, you have become very independent. I can even leave you in your room to play alone! Sometimes I peek in at you and see you reading books or playing with your dolly. My favorite is when I catch you singing to yourself or along with a song. Your voice is so sweet as you try to say all your new words. You make my heart happy. Your kisses and hugs are still the best part of my day, and I love how much you laugh and try to get everyone around you to laugh.  God has already used you to brighten up the world a bit and I know He has big plans for you. I love you so much!

Is social media keeping you from reality?

How long do you spend reading about other people's lives on Facebook, browsing through adorable homes on Pinterest and living vicariously through others experiences on Instagram rather than enjoying your own life.
I mean honestly.

I often make excuses for the amount of time I spend on Facebook or "doing" some form a social media claiming that I am encouraging others or trying to stay connected, However, it dawned on me recently how much of an impact social media was having on my life.

1. I was wasting my time on Social Media
Since I had the Facebook App on my phone, it was so easy for me to get caught up in reading status updates, browsing through pictures and just getting lost in other people's worlds. Ironically enough, that time I spent in other people's worlds was precious time wasted in my own world. It was nothing for me to check Facebook several times an hour! Think of all the time wasted!

Ephesians 5:15-16
Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil.

Is Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, or Instagram the best use of my time? Probably not. I don't think there's anything wrong with utilizing them properly. But to spend hours just browsing definitely doesn't seem like a good use of time.

2. Social Media was encouraging me to compare.

Most people share their best stories, cutest photos and funniest videos. Their pictures are of the best room in their house and their most delicious looking dinner. I know that's how I roll! I don't often see ugly photos, videos of kids screaming, piles of dirty laundry or dinner fails. So quite honestly, social media is far from reality.
Looking at only the positives of other people's lives was causing me to compare, and not in a good way!
The constant filling of my mind with other people's best moments was causing me to become discontent with my normal moments.

2 Corinthians 10:12
Not that we dare to classify or compare ourselves with some of those who are commending themselves. But when they measure themselves by one another and compare themselves with one another, they are without understanding.

If I didn't know any better, I would say Paul was talking about Facebook! Ok, so I know that's out of context of course, but I think the principle still applies. Comparing is dangerous and can lead to the following issue.

3. Social Media was breeding discontentment in my life.

No matter who you are, what you spend your time on will affect you in some way. As I got caught up in the spirit of comparison, a little seed of discontentment started to grow and my perspective of my own life began to be skewed. I started to have thoughts like,

I wish I could go there on vacation
My kitchen never looks like that
Her baby sleeps through the night, why won't mine?
I wish I had the money to afford what that person has
I wish I had the creativity to come up with that
They must be happier than I am

I am ashamed to admit that I allowed those thoughts to creep in. As I was having time with the Lord and reflecting on this, I realized that something needed to change. I couldn't allow this to go on in my life or it was going to destroy me.

So what's the solution?
Well, for me personally, I have decided to take action against wasting time! As the Holy Spirit convicted me about this issue, I deleted the Facebook App from my phone so that it's not there to tempt me. You have no idea how many times I've wanted to download it back on my phone just to "check something"! However, if it is important enough, I can use my computer and limit my time.
I've also decided to replace Facebook with a better use of my time. So when I am sitting rocking my sweek pea and really want to check my Facebook, I have several Christian e-books downloaded on my phone that I can read, I can listen to a sermon on podcast, read the Bible on my phone, pray, or just be in the moment and put my phone down.

I have decided to take it a step further and rather than just eliminating the issue, work towards the opposite result: gratitude, thankfulness and contentment.
Each day, I make it a point to journal, thanking the Lord for something in my life. It's amazing how many things I take for granted each day. It's also amazing how fostering an attitude of gratefulness can change your perspective on life.

1 Thessalonians 5:18
Give thanks in all circumstances for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

As I have taken a step back from my social media "reality", I have become so grateful for the life that the Lord has blessed me with. It is easy to assume that someone else has it better than you when in reality, we all have our struggles, our weaknesses, our bad moments, and bad days, we just don't share them with the world! I still enjoy social media and staying in touch with others and even sharing my happy moments. However, I'm happy to be back in my own world with a realistic perspective of my life.

Not everyone may be affected the way I was, but I hope this encourages you to take a step back and examine where your heart lies in regards to social media! It can be such a helpful tool, and lots of fun, but it can also be very dangerous and take away your joy. It's not worth that.

DIY Snow Globes From Baby Food Jars

If you knew me, you would know that I hate to throw anything away, even a jar! So I've been saving these baby food jars over the past 6 months just waiting for something to do with them.

With sweet pea's first birthday coming up, I had been brainstorming about how to decorate. I decided to finally enlist these baby food jars. It was a fun project and was a fun party decoration/favor for her party!
Baby Food Jar Snow Globes Directions

1. Wash out the baby jars with soap and hot water. Scrub the sticky off using dish soap and a wire brush or pad.

2. Cut felt in the color of your choice in the shape of the lid and hot glue it down.

 3. Hot glue your center piece to the middle of the lid! I found some cute little cupcake buttons to place in the center of the snow globe for sweet pea's birthday party!
4. Fill the jar with 1/2 tsp of fine glitter and a drop of dish soap to keep the glitter from clumping (yes, I learned that that hard way:)
5. Put a line of super glue around the lid and secure the lid on the jar.

6. Flip jar over and hot glue ribbon around the lid to hide the label.

7. Shake and watch the glitter swirl!
