Choose to be Content

You know the 30 days of thankfulness that everyone does for the month of Thanksgiving? A couple of months ago, I decided to commit myself to not just a month of thanks, but a year of daily thanksgiving. Remember my post about social media and how I felt it was creating a spirit of discontentment? Every time I went on Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest etc...I was exposed to all of the things I didn't have (and didn't need either)! But as I looked at all of the beautiful houses, fashionable mamas, newer cars, and seemingly perfect lives of my friends and followers on social media, I started to feel discontent with my own life.
Instead of allowing that attitude to destroy my life, I am taking action against it. I have learned that contentment isn't something that just comes naturally when your life is magically perfect. No one's life is perfect no matter how they portray it!

Paul says in Philippians 4:11
"...for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content."

Contentment doesn't just happen. We can want it, wish for it, pretend we have it, and even ask for it, but from what Paul says, it seems to me that contentment is something that we learn, and that God gives to us as we seek it. The Bible gives us some insight as to how contentment is learned.

 For example, Hebrews 13:5 says,
"Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have."

I can personally testify that contentment is not dependent on money. A year ago, my husband and I were making a lot more money than we are now. With my husbands job transition, we also have had to make some financial adjustments. But I can honestly say that I am happier and more content today than I was a year ago. It's not about things, it's about perspective!

1 Timothy 6:6
"But godliness with contentment is great gain, for we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world. But if we have food and clothing, with these we will be content."

Our culture breeds discontentment with things. It's how companies market...if they make you believe that your life isn't complete without their product, you will buy it. I know I have fallen for marketing strategies several times!
It's time to take a stand against consumerism and discontentment and fight for the right perspective! For two months now, I have faithfully journaled something I'm thankful for every single day. It has totally changed my perspective on life and I actually feel truly content, happy and grateful for the life God has blessed me with. In fact, with the right perspective, I actually feel very undeserving of all of the blessings in my life. Just to give you an idea, I've compiled a list of the top ten blessings in my life. Every time I look at this list, I'm overwhelmed with gratefulness to God for each of these things!

Top ten things I'm thankful for

1. My relationship with the Lord and his faithfulness, grace and mercy toward me. I am so undeserving of his love for me, and it is only by his grace that I am who I am today.
2. My husband. There are no words to express how amazing my hubby is and how grateful I am for him.
3. My daughter. She has brought so much love and joy into our lives. She is an amazing gift and blessing from the Lord
4. Our families. I have the best siblings, and in-laws. They are some of my best friends and I'm so thankful for them!
5. Friends. I have been blessed with some awesome girlfriends, and a couple of amazing best friends who I know will always be there for me.
6. My husband's job. I am so thankful that God has blessed him with a good job in a great work environment!
7. My jobs. God has always provided work opportunities for me as we've had need. Right now I couldn't be happier working as a nanny, tutor and assistant for AllieRuth Design!
8. Our home. After a year of searching, I never thought we would find a home. Although it has been a big project (and that's an understatement), our house finally feels like a home and I love it!
9. Our vehicles. I know this may seem like a silly one, but having a vehicle makes life so much easier and it's not something I take for granted!
10. Our church. I am grateful for the Remedy and for the work God is doing there. I'm excited to be a part of it!

I hope you are inspired to record things you are thankful for as well and join me in fighting for contentment!

What I Love About Cloth Diapering

It has taken me over a year to actually write on this topic. I was so unsure of my decision to cloth diaper and I didn't want to write about something that I didn't stick with. Now that I have been happily cloth diapering for over a year, I've decided to share with you what I love about it!

My initial reason for cloth diapering was the numbers. I love finding creative ways to save/make money being a stay at home mom. Cloth diapering seemed like one of those ways! There are so many charts and figures that estimate how much money you save using cloth diapers. For us, it will probably figure out to be a few thousand just with our first baby!

A few thousand is a vacation to Hawaii right there, and you better believe I will be cashing that one in someday!

As I've educated myself more on cloth diapering, here are the 4 top reasons why I started cloth diapering and have stuck with it.

1. Cloth Diapering saves money
The average amount saved is around $3000 per child. If you have 4 kids, that's 12 grand right there! Who doesn't want to save that! I use disposables occasionally if we are going out somewhere for an extended period of time. I spend about $20 every 3 months on a box of disposables. The starting off cost of cloth diapering can be a little overwhelming, but if you watch for deals, sales and even gently used cloth diapers, it's really not too bad! I was so blessed by a friend who let me use some of her stash once I got started!

2. Cloth Diapering is great for the environment
It is estimated that it takes a disposable diaper any where from 250-500 years to decompose in a landfill. Approximately 27.4 billion diapers are disposed of each year. I don't really have to argue the fact that cloth diapers are an environmentally friendly choice!

3. Cloth Diapering is better for babies!
Most disposable diapers contain many harmful chemicals, from dioxin and sodium polyacrylate to Ethylbenzene, Styrene, Propylene and Toluene. The over exposure of those chemicals can lead to serious health issues for children over the course of their lives.
Here are a few links on the chemicals found in disposable diapers:

http://www.livestrong.com/article/111348-chemicals-disposable-diapers/
http://awesomebeginnings4children.com/the-harmful-chemicals-in-disposable-diapers/

There is much more research that can be done on this topic and it is a controversial one for sure. Bottom line, I don't believe that mamas who use disposables are harming their children at all. I even use them occasionally myself. I just see this as an added incentive to stick with the cloth diapers!

4. Cloth diapering is fun!
Disposable diapers come in one color: white
Cloth diapers come in all sorts of fun colors, patterns, and styles. It's a fun way to be creative even while changing a diaper! I love that I can match K's diapers with her outfits, not to mention watching her waddle around with her big 'ole cloth diaper butt is one of the cutest things ever!

What about the poop?
That is the question I get asked the most. No one wants a diaper full of poop that they can't just toss in the trash. It just seems gross! Trust me, I was worried about this as well until I was introduced to these fantastic life savers: GroVia BioLiners One Size Unscented - 200 Count. These liners look a little like dryer sheets and all you have to do is place one across the top of the diaper and if your baby poops, that liner can be picked up and flushed with the poop. It is so simple! One roll of 200 costs about $10. I don't use them every time because K poops pretty regularly. I try to predict when she will have a messy diaper and use them then. I'm still on my first roll a whole year later!

What about Washing?
Washing cloth diapers is so simple. I have a Wet Bag like this one here:

I hang it on the corner of my changing table and when it gets full, I dump the cloth diapers in a hot wash and throw the bag in too! For soap, I use something called Eco Nuts. They are the nuts right off of the tree that are used to make soap. I love that they are 100% natural and they clean great! They are also cheaper than any laundry soap I have ever used! I use them for all the baby clothes as well as the cloth diapers.

Here's what they look like out of the box...

After washing the diapers in hot water, I either dry them in the dryer or if it's a nice day, I love to line dry them. They seem so much fresher that way!

Then, we have lots of fun putting the inserts back in the diapers and putting them away...as you can see!

My favorite cloth diapers are the GroVia. They are a little bit more expensive up front but I have never had one of them leak or blow out. Ever! Plus, I love that the Soaker Pads just snap into the cover and if the cover is clean at a diaper change, I just have to add in a new insert to the same cover. I started off with just 5 covers and 4 inserts. Now that I use them every day, I have about 10-12 diapers and I wash them every other day.

GroVia also carries an excellent All-In-One which means the insert is already connected.

I know cloth diapering can seem overwhelming, especially just getting started! Just give it a try with one or two diapers at first. Once you realize how easy it is, you will be hooked, just like me! If you have any questions, I would be more than happy to try to answer them! I hope you enjoy cloth diapering as much as I have!
