When Others Tell You How To Parent

And we are back with week 4 of the One Year and Beyond Link Up!  The last three weeks have been great! We have covered: Taming The Tantrums, Weaning Your Baby, and Mommy Guilt. If you missed them, make sure you back track and check them out!

This week we are talking about how to deal with unsolicited opinions and advice from...well...everyone!

From the moment we all saw those fuzzy pink lines blur into existence, it was there: the advice. People telling us moms what we should and shouldn't be eating, what exercises we should be doing, how much sleep we should be getting, and so on! All of a sudden everyone everywhere has an opinion on our lives.

It is overwhelming!
People generally let you live your life how you want to...until you decide to make a little person. Then  all of a sudden, everyone has an opinion on how you should be caring for your child!
Frustrating, right?

Often the reason advice rubs us the wrong way is because the way we mother is so important to us. It's our job, and more than anything in this world we pray we are doing it right. When in a moment, a comment shatters that illusion of perfection, it does everything but make us want to nod and smile.
It's like our parenting is on trial and we are ready to defend!

Not only do we have to have an enormous amount of patience in order to feed, diaper, bath, rock, and love on our kiddos, but we also have to have patience for the stranger who has the nerve to tell us we are doing it all wrong!
I think unsolicited advice is just one of the ways God matures us as parents. Maybe he is preparing us for when our kids are teenagers! Scary thought there.

I will admit, people criticizing my parenting hits a nerve.
A nerve that instantly makes me want to defend myself with every possible excuse for why I'm right and they're wrong.
But I am learning to hold my peace.

Over time I have come to realize that often people are genuinely concerned and think they know best! I try not to let my pride get in the way of actually considering their opinion/advice!

Proverbs 12:15 The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, but a wise man listens to advice.

If it is legitimate, their advice may have saved me from some future heartache. And if it is an opinion I di
sagree with, I thank them kindly for their suggestion and move on from there. There's no point in arguing with someone who is confident enough in their opinion to share it! I just need to be informed and confident enough in the decisions I make to not allow someone else's opinion to shake me. That way, I don't take their comments as an attack because I know I'm already doing what I believe is best for my daughter regardless of what they think!

Even though we know first hand how annoying unsolicited opinions are, often we moms can be that person without even realizing it. We subtly hint that we are doing this parenting thing better because we only give our child whole wheat bread and teach them sign language. I quickly learned as a mom that just because another mother isn't doing it the same way I am, it doesn't mean they are a bad mom. God gives moms a special intuition to know what their kids need, not their friend's kids!

We can all encourage each other and offer friendly advice, but let's be careful that we don't come across the same way as that stranger on the street and make our mama friends feel like they are doing it all wrong. And when your old high school friend makes a comment about your toddler still having a pacifier, just smile and go on your merry way, knowing that you are much better equipped to care for your child than your friend is. Lord knows they wouldn't have taken the pacifier away yet either!

What are your thoughts on unsolicited opinions and advice, and how do you handle it? I can't wait to read your posts this week!

Mommy Moments #96

Hey mamas!
Welcome back for another great week of Mommy Moments Link Ups! Thank you for linking up and for spreading the word last week! We had some awesome links last week as usual.

Motherhood has its seriousness and frustration as well as its laughs. That's why we are here. Life is much easier when traveled with companions! So mamas, let's join together in the spirit of motherhood and share our moments together. We want to hear the happy, sad, tough, terrible, hilarious moments that make being a mother the best job in the world!

The top viewed link this week belongs to Casey and Alexis from This Crazy Cass Life and her post Panick Attack 1: Being A Mom Is Hard! I'm not surprised that this was the top viewed post, after all! We all know that seasons of motherhood are especially hard and it's always nice to read about someone else's fears and struggles along the way. Thanks for sharing Alexis!

17 Month Update

Happy 17 months!
You have a personality like none other. You are so energetic, expressive and full of spunk. You keep us on our toes for sure, but we wouldn't trade your craziness for anything!

Milestones
Your biggest milestone is all of the words you are saying. You've caught on to two-syllable words now and can repeat almost every word we say! Your favorites right now are George (Curious George), stroller, hammer, and outside.

Last week, you were coloring in your coloring book and you pointed to a heart and said heart! I had no idea you were able to catch on and make the connection with shapes like that. So now I'm teaching you even more! I love it! We have also taught you several words in Spanish and you know about 15 words now!

Oh, and I can't forget how quickly you have learned to use an Ipad. The little girl I nanny for has an Ipad and you can already navigate that thing better than I can! Just look at you!

You are also in the stage of life where you like to "help" with everything. And I mean everything! You like to help me unfold all the laundry, spread my piles of swept dirt back around the room etc... Even though at times, it's hard for me to be patient, I know I will miss these days of you being my helper:) I love it when you walk up to me and say in your baby voice heper which of course means helper.
You especially love to help me nanny and feed the baby!

Eating
To say you love to eat is an understatement. You ask if you can eat almost every hour of the day. Now when we lay you down in your crib at night, you tell us you want to eat as well.
Girl, you love your food, just like your mama!

The other day I got you a little cup of sherbet while we were out for a walk and you were as happy as a clam! Just look at that cheesin'!

Sleeping
You are still sleeping through the night most nights, which is great! Lately you have been waking up at like 3AM saying you want to eat. What's up with that? You've also been saying you want to eat every time we put you down for a nap or to bed. I think you're being sneaky but I always give you a snack or something to make sure I'm not putting you to bed hungry.

Teething
The teething monster is back again! You have 12 teeth and are currently cutting your eye teeth which seems to be very painful and makes you pretty cranky some days! I can't wait for them to pop through so you can be back to your happy self :)

Potty Training
We put a pause on potty training for this month. We've been running around so much, it just wasn't working. We will start back up when you express interest. Although I'm exited about the prospect of no diapers, I'm not in a hurry!

Memories:
We have had so much rain the past month it has turned parts of our garden into a muddy soup which I hate, but you love! We were walking outside after the rain and I was trying to keep you clean (imagine that!). I finally gave up and let you splash in the mud. It was a one year old's dream come true, I'm sure.

Until you got stuck in the mud and needed your dad to come rescue you!

One evening while your daddy was fishing, we took a walk along the river front with our friend Kristyn. I love watching you be fascinated by new things!

I know I will miss your incessant "no" as a response for everything so I have it captured as a lasting memory!

You still love babies, but being gentle is definitely not one of your strong points. You love giving hugs and kisses and "taking good care of" your baby friends!

You had your first movie and popcorn night with dad watching Curious George, your favorite show.

You and your cousin Madison have so much fun playing and fighting together! Even if you don't always get along, the two of you are so adorable together!

You have been a little trooper this month as we have been so busy getting our garden planted, and running around all sorts of places for doctor's visits and other errands. I couldn't help but capture this cute little post from the back seat of the car!

For our 3rd wedding anniversary we took a little trip together. We had been planning on camping that weekend but Jimmy's great grandma passed away so we headed out earlier in the week for her memorial service and funeral. We decided to take a pit stop in Chicago since neither of us had ever been there and we had a blast at Lake Michigan beach and in the city! You can read all about our trip here

You loved the view from the top of Willis Tower!
And your crazy dad took you out on the glass floor making mom very nervous!

My sweet daughter,
This month has had it's challenging moments as you are learning to be more and more independent. At the end of the day, your hugs, kisses and cuddles make all the tough stuff worth it 10x over. It's amazing to see how quickly you learn things we teach you and sweet to watch how you love to mimic your mom and dad. We pray that we could be good examples to you in how to live your life and bring God glory. You have taught us so much just in your 17 months of life here on earth.!
Sometimes I look at your sweet face and have such an intense feeling of love and gratefulness to God for blessing me with you. You are special and we love you so much. Don't ever forget that!
Love, your mama
